Spending whole childhood in this mixed culture, he was first introduced to the clarinet in his primary school days. This meeting led him more and more into music which resulted him to win “The Special Award in the Best Clarinet Performer Contest” when he was only thirteen. Desire of exploring clarinet made him to pursue the music on the Turkish Music conservatoires: Ege, İstanbul Teknik and Haliç University consecutively.

As a musician he had started his professional career with Grup Laçin, which they had played in both national and international tours. His appearance had continued on Montreux Jazz (Switzerland), Jazz a Vienne (France), Rhythm Sticks (England), Moers Festival (Germany), Etnomalaga (Spain), Skobye Jazz (Macedonia) with him playing as a guest artist in Mercan Dede&Secret Tribe, Kardeş Türküler and Yarkın Ensemble projects.

As a leader he is currently playing with his own band on different projects with guest artists such as voice virtuoso Yıldız Ibrahimova and famous Greek clarinettist Vassilis Saleas

During his academical studies, he made researchs on Historical Process of Clarinet in Turkey and Europe, in which his articles were published in several magazines. These studies also made him to write an educational book, “Techniques of Performing G Clarinet”, which can be found in musicstores.

Discovering the instrument, he had re-designed the pitch setting for; in a result, AMATI-DENAK, the leading instrument manufacturer, had produced their new G clarinets with this setting, naming the model after “Serkan Çağrı”.

Produced by Iskender Paydas, “ÂL” consists of Turkish, Greek, Azerbaijani, Crimean traditional songs, two compositions by Serkan CAGRİ (“IGDE KOKULUM”, “MORI”), two arrangements by Tolga Kilic (“Concierto De Aranjuez” and “Yalgizam”) and the remaining arrangements by İskender Paydas.

Significant musicians such as Iskender Paydaş, Mehmet Akatay, Erdem Sökmen, Ismail Soyberk, Cenk Erdoğan, Ozgur Yurtoğlu, Irfan Seyhan, Fatih Ahıskali, Bekir Sakarya, Hasan Gözetlik, Onur Nar, Hakan Güngör and bands such as Kocani Orchestra and Gundem String Ensemble have added flavor to the album with their instruments. Fuat Saka, Murat Cekem, Mehmet Akatay and Atiye have enlivened the album with their voices.

The first video clip of “ÂL” was directed by Devrin Usta for the song “IGDE KOKULUM” which was composed by Serkan CAGRI. The video was shot in the famous concert hall “GHETTO” and was accompanied by contemporary dancers. The video can be seen at the following link:

Rahim Alhaj - 2006 - When The Soul Is Settled. Music of Iraq

Rahim Alhaj was raised in Baghdad, Iraq, and began studying the oud when he was nine years old and gave solo concerts from age fourteen. He attended the prestigious Baghdad Conservatory of Fine Arts, (comparable to Julliard School of Music in the US), studying under Munir Bashir and Salim Abdul Kareem, whence he graduated from the six-year program with honors in 1990. He left Iraq the next year under pressure from Saddam Hussein’s government including imprisonment and torture due to artistic resistance to the regime. Rahim lived in Jordan and later in Syria until 2000, when he was granted political refugee status and moved to the US, where he resides in Albuquerque, New Mexico. An improviser and composer, he has performed in hundreds of solo concerts throughout the Near East, Europe and across North America. He performed at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC in June 2006 for this CD release tour. Rahim also teaches a Middle East Music History and Ensemble class at the University of New Mexico. His website is www.rahimalhaj.com.

As received from his teachers, Rahim Alhaj carries the Iraqi musical tradition, yet he has moved it along toward the next generations in his own way, in his own time. Souhail Kaspar is a master percussionist, born in Lebanon and trained at the Conservatory of Traditional Arabic Music (Nadi al-Funun al-Arabiyya) in Aleppo, Syria. He lives in Los Angeles, but travels worldwide to work, in constant demand for performances, recording sessions and teaching engagements. For online information, see www.neareastmusic.com.

Naseer-Shamma-1994-The-Baghdad-Lute2

Artist: Naseer Shamma نصير شما
Album: The Baghdad Lute عود من بغداد
Country: Irag العراق

Naseer-Shamma-1994-The-Baghdad-Lute

Naseer Shamma (Arabic: نصير شمه‎) is a renowned Arab Iraqi musician and oud player.
He was born in 1963 in Kut, a village on the Tigris River. He began studying the oud at the age of 12 in Baghdad, following in the footsteps of Jamil and Munir Bashir. When he was 11-years old, Shamma saw an oud for the first time, in the hands of a stylish music teacher. Although Shamma’s father, a shop owner, was religiously conservative, he did not object to his son’s artistic ambitions. In 1985, Shamma played his own compositions at his first concert, attended by several renowned Iraqi artists. At the time, he worked closely with the late Iraqi master Munir Bashir. But Shamma wanted to blaze his own path. Master Munir invented the technique of contemplation with oud, but Shamma wanted his music to carry content, an idea or image that is shocking. He received his diploma from the Baghdad Academy of Music in 1987. He began to teach oud after three years at the academy, as well as continuing his own studies. Shamma has composed music for films, plays and television.

Between 1993 and 1998 he taught oud the Higher Institute of Music in Tunisia, and in 1999 he took the post of Director of The Arab House of Oud (بيت العود العربي) in Cairo. He performs on the oud in a manner which combines traditional methods with his own modern compositions.

Naseer Shamma has also created an eight-string oud or lute following the manuscript of the 9th-century music theorist Al-Farabi. This new design (eight instead of six strings) expanded the musical range of the oud and gave it a distinct tonality. His innovations also include a new method of playing the oud with only one hand, which was originally invented by Salim Abdulkarim, so that children and soldiers injured during the Gulf War could play and enjoy the oud.
